Lippo's Globe

When The Point took to the streets in 2006 as Indonesia's second national English daily, nobody thought it could survive long. It had no editorial direction, its distribution network was bad, and it had no deep pockets.

No one was proven wrong. One year after I have blogged about it, The Point is no more.

Yesterday, I was holding for the first time a copy of the Jakarta Globe, its 9th day of publication.

JakartaGlobe.jpgWith the tagline 'Great Stories, Global News', the Jakarta Globe runs six days a week in 48 full colour pages packed in three sections -- main news & My Jakarta metro news, Business & Sports, and Life & Times. Cover price is Rp 8,500.

Full-page full-colour advertisements from notable brandnames like LG, Master Card and in-house placements by Lippo Group of companies have dotted the print run.

As a serious photographer, I like the way the Globe places emphasis in photo-journalism in the same league as South China Morning Post and Straits Times Singapore. In fact more, the centre-spread of Life & Times section is devoted to a pictorial feature, named "Eyewitness", comprisng several images reminiscing the LIFE magazine era.

After decades of complacency, I reckon the dominant Jakarta Post finally meets its perfect rival. The editor at the Post had better start keeping track of the Globe. I don't think the Post, with its 28-page configuration including the classified and news and features befitting the appetite of a village paper, could match the Globe in terms of width and depth in content. And content is king, as can be seen in most Bahasa Indonesia news and business dailies.

Interesting, the Jakarta Globe is linked to James Riady of the Lippo Group, a personality T. Ananda Krishnan's deceased ASTRO operations in Indonesia are at odds with.

(According to Indonesia's Investor Daily yesterday (Page 7, National & Politics), satellite TV subscribers in Surabaya who are left uncompensated subsequent to unilateral service termination are ganging up to hurl ASTRO to a class action registered under No. 671/Pdt.G/2008 with the Pengadilan Negeri, dated November 18, 2008.)

I hope Editor-in-Chief Wim Tangkilisan and CEO Marshall Cooper will stay the course and keep the Globe growing. With its English-speaking populace on the increase, and its expatriate business communuty forever expanding, Indonesia deserves a far better English daily than what it has now.

All the best!

Mistaken (online) identity

Help! I have an identity problem in Indonesia, thanks to Kompas, one of the big league newspapers in the country.

PB2008_Kompas.jpg
No, I didn't send Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng (as seen in KOMPAS picture, above) to be my representative in Pesta Blogger 2008... KOMPAS Tekno, November 4, 2008

I am slated to speak at Pesta Blogger 2008 in Jakarta today, meeting three ministers and over a thousand Indonesian bloggers across the country.

My keynotes will touch on my eye-witness account of unity in myriad cultural diversities, vibrancy of media freedom comparable to India, and the engagement/endearment of bloggers by the present Indonesian government -- and a contrast to the current situation in Malaysia. I hope the Malaysian Embassy folks can sacrifice a day of their golf to listen to what I talk.

BY THE WAY... Will the right Jeff Ooi please stand up.

First Internet connection in 6 days... and then Jelutong

It's like building a complete kitchen with Michelin Star Rating but forgetting the plumbing.

I understand this is entirely out of control of my good host, Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism and Culture. Alongside with other international bloggers, I have been accommodated in 5-Star hotels but Internet connection has been difficult in three cities in the past six days.

Telkomsel was kind enough to loan us a HSDPA wireless broadband USB-kit the very first day I dropped into Bali, and I was delighted to note that their USB kit is an updated version compared to the one Maxis and Celcom adopted -- both are supplied by Huaiwei. (But my friends in Indonesia say the one Indosat used is supplied by ZTE, and works fine!)

TELKOMSELFlashx600.jpg

But it was not plug-and-play. The account activation requires human interaction with a human voice at the Help Desk. The moment I got it activated, it was time to leave for Jogjakarta the next morning.

In Jogja, I realised that though I had the prepaid access has a time credit of some five hours, the but Telkomsel SIM card was not carrying any usage credit in rupiah value, or pulsa in Bahasa Indonesia.

TELKOMSEL02x600.jpg

It didn't make things better in Jogja. Though the kind Ministry staff gave me a 4-hour prepaid Internet card to access Wi-Fi at the Melia Purosani hotel, wireless signal was limited to certain blocks and mine was not service-covered.

Today, I was moved into another posh hotel in Jakarta and was told that Internet is limited to the lobby bar. So, I posted this blog at the lobby, but was very delighted to discover that Wi-Fi is indeed accessible on the 11th floor. Deja vu!

I must state here that, though there's ample room for public Internet infrastructure to improve further, I am impressed that even the Kota Tua area adjacent to the Old Batavia of Jakarta is readily connected with WiFi hotspots.

Hotspot-Jakarta_4967x600.jpg
WiFi hotspot readily available at the Kota Tua area adjacent to Old Batavia, Jakarta

Now, I have so much backlog to clear -- reply emails, send new emails, and post pictures.

The right 'Penang Formula'

I am so eager to log in because someone alerted me to read an article by Soo Ewe Jin, a Penangite who insists that 'you can take a Penangite out of Penang but never the Penang out of a Penangite'.

sooewejincomment.JPGIn the commentary titled: Penang should think small to grow big, Ewe Jin dishes some free advice for Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, whom he thinks to be "in a bit of a dilemma over how to develop the state".

In the footnote, Ewe Jin was described as someone whose family house in Jelutong -- my parliamentary constituency -- was demolished to make way for development earlier this year. He hopes a nice 5-storey media and advertising hub rather than a 22-storey high-rise will come up in its place.

I only came to know that Ewe Jin's demolished house was precisely the one that cut all fears (of the incumbent) to supply electricity to the little construction cabin that was used as the operation room for my GE2008 campaign. And now it's gone.

I will treasure what Ewe Jin writes today. It's a wake-up call for the present state government of Penang. Cut the crap about the misadventures of the previous Koh Tsu Koon state government. They are completed history.

To Penangites, it's the present and the future that matters. Just get to know Penangites better and run Penang well.

See you in Indonesia

Now, has Malaysia 'got it'?

Our neighbour Indonesia certainly has more respect and recognition for bloggers as a catalyst for democracy. They have made a bold statement. This year's Pesta Blogger is being supported by three Indonesian ministries -- the ministries of Culture and Tourism, Communication and Informatics, and Research and Technology. All three ministers are expected to attend the event, which will take place in Jakarta on November 22.

The theme for Pesta Blogger 2008 is "Blogging for Society".

PestaBlogger2008x600.jpg

According to Penangite Ong 'Maverick' Hock Chuan, whose Indonesia-based company is coordinating the event for the second straight year, the support to Pesta Blogger 2008 comes in many forms, including the easing of bureaucracy, and making available the BPPT auditiorium as a venue for Pesta Blogger.

And in the case of the Communications and Informatics Minister Pak Muhammad Nuh, who continues to offer his support as the patron of Pesta Blogger, he has made "a pledge to donate 10 laptops to encourage participation from as many bloggers or would-be bloggers as possible".

The event is also sponsored by the US Embassy -- this is probably the first time a US Embassy is sponsoring a major blogger’s event anywhere in the world outside USA -- and big names like Microsoft and Toyota.

Even the mainstream media have committed themselves as official partners of the event. They include Kompas, Koran Tempo and Tempo Interaktif, the Jakarta Post and Detik.com among others.

To lend credence to Pesta Blogger, Pak Nuh and the US Ambassador to Indonesia, Cameron Hume, both made an appearance and spoke at the official launch of the event on October 22.

Impressions of Indonesia

Another new initiative included in this year’s Pesta Blogger is the invitation to one foreign blogger each from five neighboring countries and the US and Australia. They are to visit three Indonesian cities of diverse culture -- Bali, Yogjakarta and Jakarta -- and then to conclude their trip by sharing their impressions about Indonesia, its culture and blogging community with the participants of Pesta Blogger 2008. This project is being held in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

In conjunction with the field trip and the theme 'Blogging for Society', a photography contest is being organised to provide the impact of visual arts that say, through blogs as a new media, seeing is believing the diversified universe of humanity and mankind.

I am glad and honoured to be an invited blogger to participate in the event, and I thank the Indonesian Ministry of Culture of Tourism for sponsoring my trip.

I hope, through my presence as a parliamentarian/blogger and my contribution as a photographer, I will be able to play the role of a Malaysian cultural ambassador in strengthening the titian muhibbah between our two countries of myriad similarities, and to fellowship with cross-border bloggers who share our common language in blogging, that's to continue promoting blogs as a catalyst for change.

Big Bang Penang!

UPDATES November 13 23:54hr...

I read from overseas that the event has been cancelled. What a big bang, indeed.

What went wrong? We did all we could to give the organiser the green lane to bring Penang into the world map.

The promotion vignettes on ASTRO/ESPN ran regularly. The organiser sounded all right when she called me on November 8. Yeah, what went wrong?

I am naming names, BIG names!

Ilie Nastase, Europe | John Newcombe, Australia | Jimmy Connors, North America | Bjorn Borg, Europe | John McEnroe, North America | Ivan Lendl, (now) North America | Mats Wilander, Europe | Stefan Edberg, Europe | Boris Becker, Europe | Jim Courier, North America | Pete Sampras, North America | Andre Agassi, North America | Thomas Muster, Europe | Marcelo Rios, South America | Carlos Moya, Europe | Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Europe | Patrick Rafter, Australia | Marat Safin, Europe | Gustavo Kuerten, South America | Lleyton Hewitt, Australia | Juan Carlos | Ferrero, Europe | Andy Roddick, North America | Roger Federer, Europe | Rafael Nadal, Europe

How often do you get to see all tennis super stars in action in one city?

Come to Big Bang Penang, the Kings of Tennis are smashing it all up in Penang, Nov 14-16.

The action is right up at The Esplanade, thanks to fellow Penangite, Arianna Teoh.

Gerakan and Umno... the Opposition in new Penang... ( 2 )

BN the Opposition party in Penang, particularly the Gerakan, has been pressing for a disclosure of the total expenses spent in the trade delegation led by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to South Korea recently (October 28 - November 1). Read details here.

They now got their wish come true. Today, my colleague Dato' Lee Kah Choon, who is the chairman of the Executive Committee of InvestPenang which organised and coordinated the trade mission to Korea, revealed the Guan Eng Delegation's expenses -- PLUS a comparison of how much the BN/Gerakan trade mission Koh Tsu Koon led to India in 2007 had incurred in similar expenses accounts.

kOREA_Expenses.gif

Let's put some perspectives to the numbers.

  1. DELEGATION SIZE: The delegation size was almost similar -- each on the young side of the 50's (government plus private sectors)
  2. NUMBER OF DAYS IN ITINERARY: Guan Eng's delegation spent LESS to stay more days, while Tsu Koon's delegation spent MORE to stay less days -- and you know I know, cost of living in Seoul is much higher than in Chennai/Bangalore.
  3. ROUND-TRIP DISTANCE: The air-travels are almost equidistant -- Koh Tsu Koon's was Penang-to-Chennai/Bangalore; while Guan Eng's was to Seoul
  4. AIR FARE: Fuel price increases in 2008 had escalated the price of total airfare inclusive of fuel surcharge, compared to 2007 when Koh Tsu Koon led his delegation to India -- yet the Guan Eng Delegation's total airfare cost about 46% lower. We didn't travel on First or Business Class!
  5. ACCOMMODATION: Inflation is much higher in 2008 compared to 2007, and yet the Guan Eng Delegation's hotel bills were about 78% lower than Tsu Koon's -- we save taxpayers' money by staying in budget-class hotel with no shampoo and shower gel supplied!

In the final analysis, what Koh Tsu Koon's delegation spent in just one trip could have funded the Guan Eng Delegation's trade mission to Korea THREE times over.

And I let you Google the net to see if Tsu Koon's 2007 trip to Chennai/Bangalore had brought back any investments from India to date. Just go figure!

Obama has won.
Now it's time to heal global economy.

CHANGE WE CAN, Obama said throughout his campaign.

America, in their lifetime, responded well and put in the first non-White president into the White House -- significantly after trolling to cross the racial divide for 232 gruelling years since Independence.

Obama_CA_081105x600.jpg
Frontpage November 5, 2008, The Bakersfield Californian

It has been a long, gruel race to the White House. Crisis helped Obama. Can Obama help solve crisis?

Having survived eight years of Bushism, are we now seeing a new president, but the same problems?

I hope the euphoria will die down soon.

More than half the world is financing the US economy, and in a way, life-supporting the greenback as countries use the US$ for their forex benchmark and national reserves. Structurally, in finance and economy, this is dicey business of a global scale.

Obama must now manage US economy well so that all US$-reliant economies which are owed trillions in off-balanced trade will not be made the contagion victims of domestic economic turmoil in his homeland.

Chicago Sun-Times, November 6, 2008.

For Malaysia which eulogises "anyone from a minority group can be a nation’s leader", let's make sure it starts from home.

America has changed. Can we, Malaysia -- even in 232 years?

Gerakan and Umno... the Opposition in new Penang

What could be wrong for the Chief Minister to double up as the Tourism & Investment Ambassador for Penang when he goes on trade and overseas missions to sell the state as the choice destination for the overseas markets -- and all expenses paid for by the host countries?

But our Barisan Nasional people just miss the point. Obviously, they are not so used to being in the Opposition.

600xKorea_2979_APTIC.jpg
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng delivering a keynote address at the Asia Pacific Tourism Investment Conference (APTIC) and Exposition 2008 in Seoul, October 30, titled: "Sustainable Tourism Development in a Heritage Environment — the Penang Story"... LensaPress photo by Jeff Ooi

After having helmed the Penang state for 34 years as a coalition since 1974 till 2008, there is enough historical proof for me to believe that the Gerakan-led Barisan Nasional has been a lame force in generating ideas and future-looking policies and governance. They had good people around but devils rule because good men did nothing.

On the other hand, I had also thought that, by relegating them into the political minority in the state -- the whole bunch of them, Koh Tsu Koon's Gerakan included -- they will lick their GE2008 wounds and perform better as the been-there, done-that type of ruling party (but now the Opposition) to do larger good for Penangites.

But I was wrong, dead wrong. Old dogs could not learn new tricks. Some in the likes of the Umno's ball-carrying ex-MP, Huan Cheng Guan, are a political scoundrel good at plainly anjing menyalak bukit. Nothing more, nothing less.

Huan is symbolic and iconic of how the present Gerakan senior leadership sucks up to Umno for a life-support system.

For the record, Huan is an esteemed Vice President of Gerakan elected by its national delegates and yet nowadays, at least officially, he lowers himself to earn his keeps as an office-boy for the BN Back-benchers Club, carrying the title of 'executive secretary'. Huan should have shown publicly -- and chin up -- that his livelihood is not hinged to the Umno gravy-train.

This time, he couldn't wait for the Penang state government's investment-inducing trip to South Korea (October 28 - November 1, including two days of travelling to-and-fro) to complete its course and hastily he asked: “The Koreans are now busy rescuing their own companies; do you think they have time for us? (Chief Minister) Lim Guan Eng should take care of his own backyard and ensure that everything is in order before leaving the country.”

And Huan's masters in Umno hastened to join in the fray not a single minute too late. Quote The Star on the day Huan went to Press:

Penang Umno liaison committee deputy chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Rashid Abdullah questioned the need for such a big delegation, saying the largest entourage the previous state administration had ever handled was only 25 people.

“The DAP criticised the previous Barisan Nasional administration for allegedly not doing anything right but now they are keeping quiet when spending taxpayers’ money.

“What has happened to their much talked about Competency, Accountability and Transparency (CAT) system? Has Guan Eng ever told the people that he travelled Business Class or First Class whenever he goes on official overseas trips?” he asked.

Verily, Umno leaders in Penang used to travel on quota basis with the former chief minister who is now persona non-grata to Penang Umno itself. The records in Penang state government must have expenses records to support this, you just need to search for the proof.

To these Umno goons, overseas travels means First Class cabin, and the R&R programmes. Kind of a (more) cuti (less) sambil belajar quota system and rewards by any standard and opportunity.

But not for us under the present government. We travelled on restricted category of economy class flights, which means the lowest fare possible, and we stayed in budget-class hotel with no shampoo and shower gel supplied. It costs about US$65 per room not when the going price around the metropolitan COEX region of Seoul is around US$400 per room night.

危机 (wei ji) -- Looking out for silver linings

I am not sure if Huan's MBA is studied for or was bought from a business school of lesser reputation, but he showed his naivette when he uttered: "The Koreans are now busy rescuing their own companies; do you think they have time for us?"

Indeed, a South Korean minister expressed his surprise that Penang was bold in looking out for opportunities within crisis times. The Chinese phrase "wei ji" ( 危机), which was inferred to by Korea's First Deputy Minister of Tourism, Sports and Culture, precisely denotes that there are ample opportunities in the midst of crisis.

600xKorea_3457_KTSC.jpg

There you are Huan, how much you understood the age-old Asian psyche and wisdom of modern management.

In Korea, we specifically looked for opportunities in selling MM2H tourism-related products, investments in technology sectors, seeding new openings in the hospitality and service industries, and executed several initiatives in media and trade relations.

US$100m INVESTMENT IN BATU KAWAN

History is the perfect chronicle of truth. While Huan was rotting away his opportunity as the former MP for Batu Kawan (2004 - 2008), this government delivers when he failed to get done during his time. On October 30, a MoU to develop an international-class golf course resort on a piece of 400-acre land in Batu Kawan was sealed between the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and DK ENC of South Korea, which has been instrument in developing a 52-hole golf resort in Hanoi.

The development project worth an investment of US$100 million will be completed by 2011. We hope to attract Korean golfers and holiday-makers besides providing jobs and boosting local consumption in the Penang state's economy.

Back in Malaysia, the local press recorded that the signing of the MoU for the RM350mil (US$100mil) golf course in Batu Kawan is testament of South Korean investors’ confidence in Penang’s future.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by the chief executives of the two foremost TV stations in Korea, the MBC which produced the immensely successful costumed series Dae-chang-gum, and the SBC.

TECHNOLOGY SECTOR

High-end technology continues to be our key focus to replace the labour intensive LVO (Large Volume Output manufacturing industries that had been showing critical signs of lost lustre before we booted out the Tsu Koon administration in GE2008.

In between, we also took time off to visit two key technology entities while we were promoting Penang in Korea. Apart from the courtesy calls, we made sure the Chief Minister has close-door frank talks with the head honchos -- a schedule purposefully drawn up months in advance.

However, due to competitive reasons, I am not in a position to disclose critical information about these visits.

MICE -- WORLD-CLASS CONVENTION CENTRE

There has been much press about Penang setting its eyes on a world-class facilities that can house modern-day meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) events. We visited the senior management of COEX, Korea's foremost convention and exposition managers, to collate input for our Penang plan.

600xKorea_3122_COEX.jpg
The Penang team was warmly received by Mr Park Chong-Man, the senior executive vice president of COEX

MEDIA & TRADE RELATIONS A MUST FOR KOREAN MARKET

Our first visit to South Korea in May stunned us because visibility of Penang as a superb destination for tourism and investment was least understood by the Koreans. In fact South Koreans, especially the golfers and honeymooning newly-weds, are fondly closer to and more familiar with Kota Kinabalu as their choice destination compared to Penang. Look, how badly Penang has been marketed all these years!

Guan Eng took time to engage the local media in order to "sell" Penang to the Koreans.

600xKorea_3119_Media.jpgEngaging the print media in Seoul

One more interesting news is that the Chinese community, predominantly comprising immigrants from the neighbouring Shandung province of People's Republic of China, has reached its second and third generations as neutralised residents in South Korea.

I know of one of them who was instrumental in creating the Seoul-Kota Kinabalu route for the tourism industry there, and he happens to be a vice president of the Korean Chinese Chamber of Commerce. A courtesy call and forging of networking is definitely a worthy investment.

MALAYSIA MY 2ND HOME (MM2H)

Having been involved in the planning and execution of the trade mission, I personally am convinced that a private sector working closely hand-in-hand with the state government in foreign trade missions will garner a lot of confidence among overseas investors who have heard of this CAT (Competency, Accountability, Transparency) government that differentiates from the corruption and cronyism-infested government of the past.

This is demonstrated by the active participation of enterprising private entities active in Penang, namely Property developers Eastern & Oriental Bhd and E&O Hotels, SP Setia Bhd, Hunza Properties Bhd, Ideal Property Intelligence Sdn Bhd and the Penang Health Association. They joined hands as integral components of the Penang Pavilion organised by InvestPenang.

Besides attracting investors from Korea, our key objective is to promote Penang as the choice location for Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme, a long-term effort initiated by Tourism Malaysia.

I hope Gerakan and Umno should stop insulting our private sector by accusing them of wasting taxpayers' money, because their combined 42-member delegation was paid for through their own pockets. Huan and Rashid indeed should apologise for accusing and insulting the private sector that had wanted to cooperate and collaborate with the new Penang state government.

Doing the numbers

Can't they count?

There are three versions of the total price-tag for the Eurocopter deal coming from the horses' mouths.

  1. Defence Minister Abdullah Badawi: RM1.7 billion (rounded it up from RM1.67 billion).
  2. Defence Ministry secretary-general Abu Bakar Abdullah: RM1.1 billion (full stop).
  3. Deputy Defence Minister Abu Seman Yusop: RM1.6 billion (rounded up from RM1.604 billion).

It sounds like a matter of dumb, dumber, dumbest. The ministry of defence is just indefensible when it comes to dumbers numbers. And it's now academic.

BY THE WAY... The Ministry of Defence seems to buy its weaponry just by reading catalogues. The Parliament was today told that the Eurocopter deal was sealed without any physical evaluation or test flights on the helicopters. Not even factory visits.
